- DISKPARK - Universal fixed disk parking program.
- Written by Herb Rose
-
- Donated to the public domain by Herb Rose, Aug. 1988.
-
- To run the program, simply type DISKPARK at the DOS prompt.
-
- The importance of parking the heads on your hard disk cannot be
- overstated. When your computer is turned on or off, magnetic
- fluctuations can occur in the read/write head of the disk drive.
- Unless you have moved the heads to a safe location (i.e. PARKED
- the heads), your heads will be over a portion of the disk which
- contains data or programs. Specifically, the heads will be
- located at the last cylinder where something was written to or
- read from the disk. The magnetic fluctuations can cause the data
- under the heads to be unreadable after time.
-
- DISKPARK will move the heads on your hard disk to a 'safe' area.
- It will work for all disks, on any IBM PC or compatible running
- DOS 2.0 or higher. When you run the program, it determines how
- many fixed disks are on your system, and where the safe zone is
- for each disk. It then moves the heads to that safe zone.
-
- When the heads are parked, you can safely power your computer
- off, or you can return to DOS. The disk heads will remain parked
- at the safe zone until the disk is accessed again.

-
- I have gotten into the habit of leaving my computer on for hours
- at a time, while I work on several projects. I have developed a
- program called AUTOPARK, which will AUTOMATICALLY park the heads
- on my fixed disks during periods of no disk activity. It is a
- memory resident program, and does not interfere with other programs
- the computer might be running.
-
- With AUTOPARK, you can be assured that your data is protected as
- much as possible when you lose power, or when a less diligent person
- just turns the computer off without parking the heads.
-
- The program is great for BBS systems and office environments, where
- your computers may be left running for hours or days with BBS programs
- or spreadsheets being recalculated. As long as there is no disk
- activity, the heads are safely parked. When the disk is accessed, a
- timer starts. When the timer expires, the heads are parked again.
- Each disk access restarts the timer. The duration of the timer
- is set when you first run the program, and is variable up to an
- hour. The program only takes 640 bytes of RAM, and does not
- interfere with other memory resident programs.
